The anime is somewhat notable for having many kissing/make-out scenes, furthering the idea that it's designed to be to female audiences what modern isekai now are to male viewers. This becomes incredibly confusing with the presence of Nuriko, who is seemingly both male and female. Even though Tamahome is her love interest, several other male characters vie for her affection.
Miaka is surrounded by numerous men, many of which are meant to be not just handsome but almost beautiful. With Fushigi Yugi, however, these circumstances are completely reversed. Given that the harem genre had become trite just before isekai did, the combination of these two has rubbed many anime fans the wrong way. Not only are the male main characters frequently incredibly overpowered, but they also often find themselves surrounded by a gaggle of beautiful women.
Many modern isekai, namely shows such as The Rising of the Shield Hero, are often accused of being male power fantasies, and for various reasons.
